Rather than heat from the bottom, the Allied Precision 1,500-Watt Floating Tank De-Icer always floats on top of the water courtesy of a Styrofoam float. Furthermore, the powering cord exits safely out of the top of the float and can even be used in plastic tanks with the use of the guard (not included).
